The Brotherhood Task Force of Northwest Louisiana has been relatively successful in devoting it efforts towards effecting change in the lives of people of color and the underserved populations residing in Region VII via testing, counseling, outreach, support group meeting, and the management of an interactive chat line. This nonprofit organization, despite its almost nonexistent financial solvency has been able on June 27,2005 distribute 1,000 safe sex packages, amass 150 Rapid Testing Kits via Abbot Laboratory and Orasure company, conduct a National HIV/AIDS Testing Day Campaign Blitz and Forum between May-June, 2005. And prior to the advent of Hurricane Katrina, the Brotherhood Task Force of Northwest Louisiana provided transportation for infected men of color to attend a skills building conference in Jackson, Mississippi and also has effectively devoted efforts towards testing people of color and the underserved populations incarcerated in several regional penal institutions as well as at several colleges and universities located in Northwest Louisiana. After Hurricane Katrina, the Brotherhood Task Force of Northwest Louisiana has continued its outreach, testing activities at local sites frequented by people of color and the underserved populations of Region VII. Specifically, testing is still conducted at the penal institutions, colleges and universities. Also members of the BTFNLA have participated in HIV/AIDS Mpowerment conferences in San Francisco, California and Dallas, Texas. The interactive chat line was open for call-in discussion and counseling during June-July, and most recently, during the month of August began to organize and activate the “Everybody Is Somebody HIV/AIDS Support Group that allows people of color and the underserved populations in Region VII to meet once a week to discuss issues that currently impacts on their lives. And from the educational standpoint, will begin to provide free basic computer training for individuals in Region VII infected with, affected by or impacted by HIV/AIDS. Efforts are also devoted towards assisting people of color and the underserved populations in Region VII to complete Registration and Scholarship Packets to attend the NAPWA Staying Alive Conference 2006 in New Orleans, Louisiana beginning on December 6, 2006. The BTNWLA is also actively involved in the planning and implementation of activities during the National Latino Awareness Day scheduled for October 15, 2006. It has also been instrumental in the organization of “Sisters Saving Lives” the female component of the BTFNLA.
